Huang Ting Jing

“Yellow Court Classic”

Calligraphy written in Qing Ming,

Year of Geng Shen (1980)

* This is a Chinese Taoist meditation text from 288 CE. It is sometimes referred to as the “Jade Book,” as it is mentioned in its text. The fourth century “Sage of Calligraphy,” Wang Xizhi (AD 265-420), recreated the full text of a portion of the scripture on stone tablets. (see image to the right). The Yellow Court refers to the area of the emperor’s castle in which the emperor and ministers gather to try to understand the will of the heavens for the sake of the Kingdom.

The figure above on the left with red characters is a portion of another stone rubbing of Wang Xizhi’s work in cursive style, listed as public domain of metmuseum.org. It’s interesting that in this rubbing, Wang Xihi wrote the kaisho equivalent of the sōsho written characters as Sensei has often done in his works.
